The Lilley-Stirling family papers contain legal documents related to a lawsuit between Edith Stirling and George P. Lilley concerning the legality of the sale of Springfield Plantation from the estate of Edith Gwinn (nee Stirling) to Thomas Devall. Included are documents related to the estates of Edith Gwin, Samuel Gwin, Joseph D. Fonte, and George P. Lilley. Some items relate to minor heirs. Included are land grants of Thomas Lilley and Philip Bradshear, and slave bills of sale. Souchon and Quitman Kohnke, a libel suit brought against MacKowen by Kohnke, the capture of Union General Neal Dow at Port Hudson, MacKowen's rare books, Louisiana politics, the Blue Grotto property, and personal matters. Financial papers include accounts of John McKowen, William W. Chapman (a general merchant), William R. McKowen, John C. MacKowen, and members of the Pipes family. Papers of John C. MacKowen document medical expenses and income from property owned in San Francisco. Professional and personal papers include items related to John C. MacKowen's medical career, his travels, Louisiana politics, and McKowen family history. Printed materials include a pamphlet written by MacKowen entitled Aromatic Toxins, items related to medicine and public health in Louisiana, ephemera, and newspaper clippings.
